Prevention of Pollution and Effective Utilization of Resources

Prevention of Pollution

Basic Approach

Based on our environmental policy, we are committed to preventing soil and air pollution, believing that our efforts in environmental conservation contribute to the realization of a sustainable society. As part of our efforts to prevent air pollution, we are working to reduce various environmental impacts such as the leakage of fluorocarbons from air conditioning equipment, soot and smoke emissions from boilers and other equipment, and chemical substance emissions from vehicles by strengthening measures for fixed and mobile sources. Furthermore, we confirm that we are complying with legal regulations through regular inspections and other measures. In addition, we have set our own targets and are proceeding with initiatives to reduce our environmental impact.

Examples of Initiatives for Prevention of Pollution

Initiatives to reduce leakage of fluorocarbons from fixed sources

In some warehouses, we use air conditioning equipment that uses fluorocarbons as refrigerants. The Company has identified the facilities that use fluorocarbons as stipulated in the Fluorocarbon Control Act that came into effect in April 2015, and is managing them appropriately in accordance with laws and regulations. In order to control emissions and leaks, we are systematically updating the relevant equipment and switching to alternatives to CFCs and refrigerants with a lower GWP.

Efforts to reduce chemical substance (NOx and PM) emissions

By FY 2030, we intend to increase the percentage of company cars that are electric vehicles (EVs) to 100% (this refers to the 83 passenger cars used by Sumitomo Warehouse non-consolidated as of the end of FY 2023, which are mainly used for traveling between sales offices, etc.). The percentage of electric vehicles is used as an indicator to show the degree of achievement of this initiative, and the target has been set to promote the switch.

Effective Utilization of Resources and Waste reduction Promote activities such as going paperless, reducing waste, and encouraging reuse and recycling to conserve natural resources and effectively utilize raw materials

Examples of Initiatives for Effective Utilization of Resources

Reduction of raw material use

We are promoting the digitization of forms and other paperless initiatives and working to effectively utilize paper resources.

Waste reduction

For export packaging, we propose to our customers appropriate packaging according to the cargo, and we are working to reduce waste by reducing the materials used for packaging.

Waste reuse

At our distribution centers handling consumer goods, we are taking steps to reuse packaging materials such as working with our customers to reuse the cardboard boxes used for packaging when importing goods for delivery within Japan to reduce waste cardboard.

Waste recycling

Some used stretch film undergoes material recycling into raw materials for recycled plastic through initiatives with partner companies. The recycled plastic is sold by our partner companies to trading companies and manufacturing companies and is used in products such as plastic bags. In addition, some materials such as wood are utilized for thermal recycling.
